Badagry

Founded in the early 15th century on a lagoon off the Gulf of Guinea, its protected harbor led to the town becoming a key port in the export of slaves to the Americas, which were mainly to Salvador and Bahia in Brazil.
Slave trade occurred in Badagry in the early 16th century to the late 18th century (for about 300 years) by the European slave dealer. It boasted of a slave market which had slaves brought from the hinter land and sold to European slave traders.

Badagry has a historical significance to pre-colonial, colonial and post colonial Nigeria.
From the 1840s, following the suppression of the slave trade, Badagry declined significantly, but became a major site of Christian mission work. The town is renowned now as a tourist attraction, where tourist from all over the world visit every day, to see slave relics from the past.
